GAME CALLED OFF

TThe match referee called the game off before Nantwich arrived claiming the pitch unplayable due to overnight frost. Frickley / Nantwich officials / managers believe that the pitch was fit enough for the match to have gone ahead. The referee had left the ground before Nantwich arrived and did not convey his controversial decision to any Nantwich official. Both clubs are considering formulating a joint complaint to the FA over the decision..

  • 23rd March.2009. FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 0 v NANTWICH TOWN 4 Dave Walker.40 (P) Michael Lennon. 42.50 Dave Whittaker. 72

Nantwich were without Darren Tinson and Andy Kinsey for the UniBond Challenge Cup tie on Wednesday night. Tinson, who has captained the side of late, was taken ill at work on the morning of the game whilst Kinsey also reported sick on the same day. In the absence of Tinson, Dave Whittaker, who only returned to training after a five week family visit to South Africa last week, was pressed into action at Mickleover whilst Dave Tickle, an injury victim of late, was called up to the bench. Michael Lennon, who has been on the substitutes bench lately, partnered Marvin Robinson in attack in the absence of Kinsey and was twice unlucky not to get on the score sheet. With doubts over Tinson and Kinsey head coach Peter Hall may consider starting at Frickley with the same line up that took Nantwich into the quarter finals of the UniBond Challenge Cup for the first time since becoming eligible for the competition in which they meet Curzon Ashton at the Weaver Stadium on Tuesday 9th January.7.45pm.

Frickley picked up a valuable point away from home at FC United in midweek to lift themselves a place (17th), but Nantwich will be wary of a side who have lost just twice at home this season with manager Billy Heath no doubt keen to not only improve his side’s premier division position but to avenge defeats at the hands of the ‘Dabbers’ during their last couple of visits.

News - NANTWICH LEGENDS LINE UP FOR CELEBRATION DINNER - Friday 22nd January 2010

NANTWICH LEGENDS LINE UP FOR CELEBRATION DINNER

Steve Davis, Johnnie Walker, Brian Griffin, Kevin Westwood, John Scarlett.

A Nantwich Town line-up that would strike fear into the best of non-league opponents! Yes, the Dabbers’ old boys will be lining up as guests of the club at a Sportsman’s Dinner being held at the Weaver Stadium next Friday (22nd January) to help celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary season.

Walker and Griffin were the deadly strike force that fired Nantwich to Cheshire Senior Cup glory back in 1976. Five years later, Westwood scored the decisive goal against Hyde United that brought the Cheshire League title to Nantwich for the only time in the club’s history. With over 160 goals, Scarlett is the most prolific marksman in the club’s history and he played a cameo role in helping the Dabbers lift the FA Vase in 2006. Davis, of course, was player-manager at that time and the current Crewe Alex Assistant Manager is lauded at the club’s most successful boss.

The club is still trying to contact Colin Hutchinson, who managed the 1976 Senior Cup team, and Ted White who also scored in that 1981 title decider against Hyde.

Dean Saunders, the Wrexham Manager formerly of Liverpool and Wales is guest speaker for the evening. Comedian Jed Stone is also on the bill and there will be an auction of sporting memorabilia. Some tickets (priced £35) and tables for 10 are still available – please call 01270 621771 or email helen.alton@nantwichtownfc.com

Lindop Lounge to be officially opened

The evening will also see the official opening of ‘The Lindop Lounge’. The lounge bar at the stadium is being named in honour of the late Jack Lindop who served the club across five decades as Secretary and Chairman before sadly passing away in October 2008. The club is delighted that Jack’s brother, Brian, will perform the commemorative opening of the Lindop Lounge. The main function room at the stadium will be known as ‘The Fairfax Suite’ after Sir Thomas Fairfax, a name revered locally for relieving the siege of Nantwich in 1644.

INTERNATIONAL ISFA FIXTURE

England Independent Schools v Australia Schools

INTERNATIONAL ISFA FIXTURE England Independent Schools v Australia Schools Weaver Stadium, Friday 29th January. Kick Off: 7pm

The Weaver Stadium hosts its first international match at the end of the month when England Independent Schools take on Australia Schools in an under-18s international friendly match organised by the Independent Schools FA. Independent Schools played a major part in the origins of the game of Association Football, dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, and in the meetings that culminated in the formation of the Football Association in 1863. The Independent Schools have been represented on the FA Council since 1904 and the current representative is ISFA Chairman David Elleray, the former Premier League and FIFA international referee, who is now a member of the UEFA Referees Committee.

Famous past players who have come from independent schools include C.B. Fry (Southampton & England), Jimmy Armfield (Blackpool & England) and George Eastham (Newcastle, Arsenal & England). In the current professional game there are a number of established players who have appeared for ISFA representative teams during their schooldays, most notably Frank Lampard (Chelsea & England), James Beattie (Stoke City & England) and Chris Porter (Derby County). Other current professionals who were educated in ISFA schools include Nedum Onuhoa (Manchester City & England U21) and Quinton Fortune (ex-Manchester United & South Africa, now Doncaster Rovers). In all, there are 22 former independent schoolboys currently playing in either the Premier League or the Football League – along with many more in the upper echelons of the non-league game, including Nantwich Town’s very own Marvin Robinson.

Local fans will have a chance to see some of the best schoolboy players in the country after it was agreed to stage the match at the Weaver Stadium. “We have been very impressed with the facilities at Nantwich Town,” says Mark Dickson, Chief Executive of the ISFA. “It is an excellent venue and we are really looking forward to the match against Australia – it should be a great occasion.”

The England Independent Schools U18 team is selected from independent schools across the country through a lengthy regional trials process before Christmas. The match with Australia will be the first international fixture of the season and other games will follow against Wales Schools, Scotland Independent Schools and the Royal Navy. Many of those appearing will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of James Norwood, who played for last season's England Independent Schools U18 team before signing for Exeter City during the summer and making his league debut against Leeds United at Elland Road on the first day of this season.

Nantwich Town FC is delighted to be hosting this prestigious match and hopes that supporters and schoolchildren will come along and cheer on England in this ‘Ashes’ match! There is free admission for everyone to this match – with spectators being invited to make a voluntary contribution to ‘Help for Heroes’, the charity which raises funds for servicemen injured in current conflicts.
